Moving pace and elapsed pace answer different questions
Elapsed time is the full start-to-finish duration. Moving time removes the stops you specify. The distance is the same in both calculations, but a longer time produces a larger minutes-per-mile number.
Moving pace = moving time ÷ distance
Elapsed pace = elapsed time ÷ distance
Use elapsed pace to describe the whole outing, including crossings and breaks. Use moving pace to describe the time spent covering the route. Neither number changes the distance you walked.
Strava’s explanation of moving and elapsed time describes why devices and apps can report different durations. This calculator avoids guessing their pause rules: you enter the stop time yourself.
If your watch already displays moving time, do not enter it as elapsed time and subtract the same pauses again. Retrieve the full elapsed duration, or enter the moving duration with zero stops and interpret both displayed paces as moving pace.
Example: a three-mile walk with a break
A three-mile walk takes 1 hour 10 minutes from start to finish, including a 10-minute stop. Moving time is 60 minutes. Divide 60 by 3 to get 20:00 per mile while moving. Divide the complete 70 minutes by 3 to get 23:20 per mile elapsed.

These are illustrative measurements, not recommended speeds or exercise targets. Terrain, route conditions and how the walk was recorded belong with the numbers when you compare outings.
Read pace as a clock, not a decimal
A pace of 20:30 means 20 minutes and 30 seconds per unit of distance. In decimal minutes that is 20.5, not 20.30. This tool displays pace to the nearest second; calculations use the unrounded values.
Speed reverses the relationship: miles per hour equals 60 divided by minutes per mile. A smaller pace number means a higher speed. The calculator shows both miles and kilometers using the international mile of 1,609.344 meters, consistent with NIST’s length-unit reference.
Connect pace to your step measurements
If you counted steps during the same walk, add them in the optional field. Count each footfall: a right step and a left step are two steps. The tool divides the count by moving minutes for cadence, and divides distance by the count for average one-step length.
Average one-step length = distance ÷ counted steps
For the example, 6,000 steps over 60 moving minutes gives 100 steps per minute. Three miles divided by 6,000 gives a step length of 31.68 inches. These values describe the entered walk, including any error in its distance or step count.

Keep comparisons consistent
Compare moving pace with moving pace, or elapsed with elapsed. Check the distance units and whether a tracker included the same section of the route. This tool does not correct GPS drift, apply a hill adjustment or infer fitness from a result. If the distances themselves disagree, start with the tracker-versus-GPS distance comparison.
A full-day step total generally contains many different walking periods. Pairing it with only one walk’s duration or GPS distance would give a misleading cadence and step length. Use matching measurements from one clearly defined sample.
