Why step tracker distance and GPS can differ

First compare the same part of the same walk. Then check whether each distance came from steps, GPS or a measured route before changing any settings.

A difference between readings is not a measured error unless the reference is independently established. This tool does not access a watch, GPS, location or activity account.

Find out how each distance was produced

A step-based estimate multiplies counted steps by an assumed or calibrated length per step. A GPS activity estimates distance from location information. Those are different inputs and can produce different answers for the same outing.

For example, Fitbit’s official distance explanation describes steps multiplied by its “stride length” setting, but says a GPS-tracked activity uses GPS distance instead. It can use steps before GPS connects. Device behavior varies, so check the documentation for your model and activity mode.

Our steps to miles calculator always uses the step count and step length you supply. It does not reproduce a tracker’s proprietary algorithm. If a GPS-based activity differs from this calculation, changing a step-length setting may not change that GPS result.

Check these details before comparing numbers

  1. Same time window: compare the walk’s steps with the walk’s distance. A daily distance total and one recorded activity are not the same record.
  2. Same route: confirm matching start and finish points. Include or exclude the approach to the route consistently.
  3. Same unit: distinguish miles from kilometers, and avoid comparing a rounded display with an unrounded export as if they had identical precision.
  4. Same measurement method: note whether the activity used GPS, steps or another sensor. Check whether GPS was connected before the activity began.

The comparison above quantifies the gap after those checks. It does not select a winner. Use a measured reference route when possible, and note how that reference was established.

What a 10% discrepancy actually means

If the tracker shows 3.3 miles and the reference is 3 miles, the gap is 0.3 mile, or about 482.8 meters. The tracker reading is 10% longer relative to that reference:

(3.3 − 3) ÷ 3 × 100 = +10%

Reverse the two readings and the percentage is about −9.09%, because the denominator becomes 3.3. That is why the copyable result includes the reference value. A positive sign means the tracker is longer; a negative sign means it is shorter. Matching displayed values do not prove that both devices measured the route perfectly.

These checks organize the evidence; they do not diagnose the device from one number. A discrepancy can involve more than one input.

Strava’s own explanation notes that GPS drift, signal loss and jumps can change recorded distance. It also explains why different pause calculations can change moving time. When the distance matches but pace does not, the moving-versus-elapsed pace calculator helps separate those time bases.

Calibrate from a sample you can explain

For step-based distance, record a known course length and count every footfall over that same course. Divide distance by counted steps to get a mean one-step length. Repeat at a similar pace to the walking you want to estimate, rather than forcing one questionable GPS reading to fit.

The steps-per-mile calculator can do that division. Its measurement guide distinguishes one step from a full two-step stride. Fitbit’s manual measurement instructions also divide a known distance by counted steps, even though the setting is called “stride length.” Check the definition instead of assuming the label means two footfalls.

A useful note might read: “Measured 300-foot course, 144 steps, normal walking pace.” That context is more informative than storing a number alone. If different activities produce different measured lengths, the homepage’s optional local profiles can keep those measurements separate.

Compare consistently, without chasing every decimal

Look for a repeated pattern over comparable walks. Keep the route, count method and activity mode consistent when checking a setting. This guide does not prescribe an acceptable error percentage or claim that GPS always beats a step estimate.
