How the walking time estimate works
A cadence is a step rate: how many steps you take each minute. Divide a step goal by that rate to estimate moving time. A distance goal adds one more measurement, the average length of a step, so the distance can first become a step count.
For a distance goal: steps = distance ÷ step length
Total minutes = moving minutes + planned stops
The distance and step length must use compatible units. The calculator converts miles or kilometers and inches or centimeters internally. The definitions use the international inch of exactly 2.54 centimeters, documented in NIST’s length-unit reference.
You do not need a step length for a step-count goal. For example, 6,000 steps at 100 steps per minute gives 60 moving minutes. An additional 10 minutes of stops gives 70 minutes total.
Measure a cadence that reflects your walk
- Walk at the pace you want to use for this estimate. Let your rhythm settle before you begin counting.
- Time a section of the walk and count every step, including both feet.
- Divide the counted steps by the number of minutes. For a 60-second sample, the count already equals steps per minute.
- If you use a distance goal, measure step length at a similar pace. A faster step rate and a longer step are separate inputs.
For example, 220 steps over two moving minutes gives a cadence of 110 steps per minute. Garmin’s cadence definition also counts right and left steps. Check whether your device reports both feet before using a value from it.
Use moving time for your cadence sample. A long pause in the sample lowers the calculated rate; adding that same pause again as stop time would count it twice.

A two-mile example
At 26 inches per step, two miles corresponds to about 4,873.846 steps. At 100 steps per minute, that is about 48.7 minutes of moving time. Add a planned five-minute stop and the total becomes about 53.7 minutes.
The page also shows the speed implied by those inputs: about 2.46 mph in this example. Cadence alone is not speed. At the same 100 steps per minute, 30-inch steps imply about 2.84 mph instead. Your own measurements may be different from either example.
For a distance target, time uses the unrounded step estimate. The accompanying whole-step count rounds up for convenience. A displayed decimal is calculation precision; it is not a promise about when you will arrive.

These are example rates for comparing the arithmetic. They are not intensity categories, recommended cadences or exercise targets. Use the rate you measured rather than picking a label such as “brisk” and inheriting someone else’s assumed speed.
Plan the time separately from the distance
The main steps to miles converter answers how far a count takes you. This companion answers how long your goal might take at a measured rate. A daily step total collected in short bursts is not the same as one continuous walk; a single steady cadence may not describe every part of the day.
For a route with planned breaks, add their expected minutes directly. The calculator does not apply an automatic percentage for hills or traffic because those conditions vary. Adjust your plan using what you know about the route.
