Two activities, two measured lengths

Walking and running distance from steps

A combined step count does not tell you how many steps were walking or running. Start with that split, apply a separately measured one-step length to each activity, and add the distances.

Changing this choice clears the counts so their meaning stays explicit.

One step is one footfall to the next, not a full two-step stride. A length is required only for an activity with steps above zero. No length is guessed from height.

This calculator does not detect activities, read a tracker or set exercise targets. Lengths and counts are your inputs, and nothing is saved. Example measurements are illustrations, not personal defaults.

Apply each measured length to the right steps

Walking distance = walking steps × walking step length
Running distance = running steps × running step length
Total distance = walking distance + running distance

The same person’s measured length can differ between activities and conditions. There is no universal running-to-walking multiplier used here. Both lengths must describe the steps being counted; the calculator does not assume that a running length must be a particular percentage longer.

Fitbit’s official activity explanation describes step-based distance using a length setting and provides separate walking and running settings. It also describes manual measurement from a known distance and counted steps. That is a product example supporting separate measurements, not a claim that every device classifies activities the same way.

Choose the count mode before entering a daily total

Separate counts: enter walking steps that exclude running, plus the running count. A log with 4,000 walking and 2,000 running steps contains 6,000 steps altogether.

Total already includes running: enter the combined count and its running subset. With a 6,000 total and 2,000 running, the calculator derives 4,000 walking. It does not add the 2,000 to the total again.

Use the same time window for both numbers. A running activity from yesterday cannot be subtracted from today’s count. The total mode also assumes every remaining step belongs to the walking group. If the remainder includes other movement that your walking measurement does not describe, use a better-defined sample instead.

If only a total is known, these two components cannot be recovered from that number alone. Obtain the split from matching records or count the portions separately. This tool will not silently infer a walking/running share.

A mixed-count worked example

The combined distance is about 3.4091 miles. Applying the 30-inch walking length to all 6,000 steps would instead give about 2.8409 miles. That is a different assumption, not a rounding difference.

For this particular mix, total distance divided by total steps gives an effective length of 36 inches per step. The simple average of 30 and 48 would be 39 inches and would wrongly give the two activities equal weight despite their different counts. The effective 36-inch value summarizes this mix; it should not replace either measured profile.

Keep the profiles personal and comparable

  1. Measure each activity separately. Divide a known course’s distance by its footfall count for that activity. Avoid combining a running course with an all-day count.
  2. Check what “stride” means. Some device settings use that word for the distance per counted step. A full gait stride spans two steps. This calculator always expects the length of one step.
  3. Use samples that match the intended movement. A measurement from one pace or route is not a guarantee for every later outing. Re-measure when the existing profile no longer describes the activity.
  4. Keep unused activities explicit. Enter zero steps for an unused group; its length can remain blank. If both counts are zero, distance is zero and no effective length is defined.

What this estimate can and cannot explain

The result adds distances under your two stated length assumptions. It cannot validate the counts or tell which steps belonged to each activity. Incorrect units, overlapping counts or an unrepresentative length can all produce a precise-looking but unhelpful total.
