Worked example
Walking 20 min at an average 100 steps/min and then 10 min at 110 steps/min gives an estimated 3,100 steps. At a measured 28 in per step, that is about 1.370 miles; the weighted average cadence is 103.33 steps/min.
Use average cadence for each interval
Cadence is the rate of footfalls in steps per minute. CDC walking research reports this unit directly. These are time-weighted estimates: the longer interval contributes more steps than the shorter one at the same cadence.
Measure length for your own walk
The calculation uses one measured step length for both intervals. If your step length changes materially with pace or terrain, separately measured segment lengths would give a better distance estimate. This tool does not prescribe a walking intensity or health target.
Keep the intervals distinct
Enter two consecutive, non-overlapping time intervals; a zero-minute interval is allowed. At least one interval must have positive duration. Device step counts can differ from cadence-based estimates, especially around stops or changes of pace.
