Worked example
One mile is 1,609.344 m. On a measured 400 m loop, that is 4 full laps plus 9.344 m. Finishing whole laps would require 5 laps; 4 laps is slightly short of a mile.
Measure the route you actually walk
A track’s labeled distance may refer to one lane or a specific measurement line. Do not assume every lane, outer sidewalk or indoor loop is 400 m. Enter the distance supplied for your route or a measurement you trust. NIST gives 1,609.344 m for the international mile used here.
Exact target versus complete laps
The remaining distance is the portion after the last full lap before the target. The separate rounded-up count intentionally goes beyond the target if needed. The tool does not change your goal to a rounded lap distance.
Steps are personal and optional
The step estimate scales an observed lap footfall count to the exact target distance, then rounds to a whole step. Count both feet. It assumes that your step pattern remains similar and is not a device-calibration claim. Leave the optional field blank when you only want laps and distance.
