Indoor walk distance estimate

Treadmill steps calculator

A treadmill reports belt speed and time rather than your footfalls. Enter an average speed, moving minutes and your own measured length per step to estimate the distance and the number of steps for that session.

Enter your values

Result

Results are based only on the inputs and assumptions shown here. Nothing you enter is sent or saved.

Formula: belt miles = average mph × moving minutes ÷ 60; estimated steps = belt miles × 63,360 in/mi ÷ measured inches per step; cadence = estimated steps ÷ moving minutes

Worked example

At an average belt speed of 3 mph for 30 moving minutes, distance is 1.5 miles. A personal 30 in step length implies about 3,168 steps, or 105.6 steps per minute.

Use moving time and average speed

Pause time is not belt travel. If speed changes during the session, use the time-weighted average speed or calculate intervals separately. Incline changes grade, not the belt-distance arithmetic in this calculator.

Your step length matters

One step is one footfall, not a full two-step stride. Step length can differ on a treadmill and vary with speed. The measured value you enter determines the count estimate; the site’s calibration tool can help you get a personal starting value.

An estimate is not a sensor reading

The treadmill and a wrist or hip tracker may disagree because they measure different signals. CDC research has compared step counters during treadmill activity. This page derives steps from travel and personal step length, and makes no fitness recommendation.
