Vertical stair distance

Stair steps to floors calculator

Count actual upward risers, then enter their average vertical height and the floor-to-floor height of the building you mean. The result is vertical distance and equivalent floors climbed, not walking mileage or exercise energy.

Enter your values

Result

Results are based only on the inputs and assumptions shown here. Nothing you enter is sent or saved.

Formula: vertical feet = counted upward risers × measured inches per riser ÷ 12; meters = feet × 0.3048; floor equivalents = vertical feet ÷ entered floor-to-floor feet

Worked example

Climbing 120 risers that average 7 in each gains 70 vertical ft, or 21.336 m. With an entered floor-to-floor height of 10 ft, that equals seven floor-height equivalents.

A step here means one upward riser

Landing steps without vertical gain do not count. Descending steps should be calculated separately if you need a signed net height; this page totals an upward climb. The related stair rise-and-run tool handles horizontal travel.

Floors are not a fixed unit

Floor-to-floor height differs by building. The 10 ft example is simply an input, not a universal story height. Enter a measured building value to interpret the equivalent-floor result.

Vertical distance is not walking mileage

The feet and meters are elevation gain, not path length or an effort-equivalent mile count. No calories, training intensity or health recommendation is inferred.
